As is the way, step learning all the way.

I had a power failure which resulted in the Freenas box restarting, when it did I ended up with a degraded pool and 'ada2' showing as unused

I removed the drive thinking it was toasted in a surge but apparently not. WD tool shows it as 100% so no I am doubting if this was the reasons for it going off.
The drive would not be read so I 'zero'd' it with the WD tool thinking that popping it back in the Freenas would solve my problems and allow the drive to be added. But no...

Am I right in saying the drive needs to be formatted? If so, is this possible in situ, GUI or CLI?

Thanks and SORRY

No. Whatever the issue is, it isn't that. Most likely what's needed is for you to put the disk back into the pool as a replacement. Consult the manual for how to replace a disk.

I have literally just finished the process and managed to add to the pool as a replacement, though the first two attempts were unsuccessful.

I'll keep my eye on the drive after SMART test
