If CrashPlan does require Linux I'd change my vote. Running that plugin is a major feature for me.

Ok, the developer that maintains the crashplan plugin says it is not a linux jail. So that's a no. ;)

I think that's outdated. I certainly don't remember entering anything regarding Linux when I installed the plugin. 3.6.3, for example, was only released by Code 42 in February and the plugin took a couple weeks to be updated.
It looks like plugins versions are tied to your FreeNAS version.
I'm still running 9.1.1 and just tried installing the Crashplan plugin.
It installed 3.5.3 instead of 3.6.3 and tells me to enable linux_load tunable.

Soo, if i am getting things right ... rather to Upgrade my FN to 9.2.1.6 (once stable is released) and use VirtualBox jail to install *whatever* than waiting for someone to fix broken Linux jails. Riiiight ?

Both my freenas boxes do nothing except NAS stuff. No jails, no virtualbox. I have a separate esxi machine for VM's.

I think a nas should be a nas. I was even surprised to see a hypervisor make it's way into freenas.

That being said, I obviously wouldn't care if linux jails were removed. I already run two on the esxi host. No need to try to kludge something together on freenas.

That sounds right. I seem to remember one of the linux_load tunable not being required after 9.2? Pfft, for all I remember I probably did actually enter the tunable at some point and just forgot.

It's at least good to know that the plugin isn't tied to support for Linux jails.

I'll remove the tunable on my server tonight and report back. If Crashplan does indeed run natively then I'm all for getting rid of Linux jails. Come to think of it I did install the plugin while using an older FreeNAS version so what Whatteva says makes sense.

I had to reinstall the Crashplan plugin from scratch because the in situ upgrade failed. However, I can happily say that with the latest version of the Crashplan plugin on the latest version of FreeNAS no Linux hackery is necessary. Thanks and +1 to Linux jails going away.

I have a plex jail, owncloud jail and wordpress jail, wordpress db jail, and syslog jail.
It would be a long project to migrate all of them to virtualbox VMs. I sure hope the deletion of jails will not be for a little while

All of those sound like they're either plugins or regular jails. Or they could be regular jails with minimal effort to "port" them.

Regular jails aren't going away, just linux jails.

Just out of curiosity, how much percentage out of how many vote samples are considered before the final decision on Linux jails is made?

It's time dependent. There's no number of votes required for it to close.

Don't use them. Reasons why ?
  • The only one I would probably have any use for would be the Virtualbox jail, however, I have VMware ESXi on a separate server.
  • I don't really trust them. I have not heard of anyone's system being trashed by a jail, however, feedback on the forum seems to suggest they can be troublesome. I just don't want the hassle.

AFAIK there are no guides on this forum that are for linux jails.

To boot, the decision has been made that linux jails *are* going away in 9.3. So regardless they are gone. ;)

Is there any chance of bhyve finding its way into FreeNAS? Those guys are doing some great stuff.

Not too sure about this, but I think that requires FreeBSD 10 kernel, so probably won't be happening until at least FreeNAS 10 comes out and that's probably still a good time away from now.

That's a shame.. Generally the goal is to improve upon features - not remove them ;)
