I have installed two jails: Transmission based on a plugin and a TVHeadend server based on Virtualbox. This makes two datasets:

jails/transmission
jails/TV

Additionally I have these datasets:

jails/.warden-template-VirtualBox-4.3.12
jails/.warden-template-pluginjail
jails/.warden-template-standard

(If I remember correctly the Virtualbox one was added when I created the TV jail, the other ones are originating from the creation of the transmission jail. Am I right with this?)

What is the purpose of these datasets? Do they serve as template for creation of further jails? Is there any connection now between these templates and the transmission and TV jails? In other words: Can they safely be deleted (if no further jails will be required for example)?

The .warden* datasets are templates as they suggest and are used in creating new jails. They can be deleted, however since they consume such little space, I'm not sure why you would delete them unless there was an issue creating a new jail. They will be downloaded again the next time you need to create a new jail.
