Finally had the time to see what would happen with my direct connect tests. First I gathered up some files, a total of 24 of them, a 44GB blueray iso and a 4.6GB DVD iso some 5.1 flac files and a few other 2 channel flacs to get as close as I could to 50GB. I was over by 105K and could live with that. The second batch of files were 466 files of various types and sizes which totaled 10gb. All tests were run 3 times and averaged.
Test 0 was between the built in Broadcom ports on the motherboards
50gb test 8:06
10gb test 2:07
Test 1 was between my standard PC with a Broadcom port to the server with an Intel dual port Nic installed.
50gb test 7::26
10gb test 2:02
Test 2 just the reverse from server to PC
50gb test 7:23
10gb test 2:20
Test 3 was from the PC now with the exact same Intel Nic as the server, to the server
50gb test 7:14
10gb test 1:52
Test 4 the reverse of test 3
50gb test 7:26
10gb test 2:06
While there are some differences I can't say that they are wholly due to the Nics as the drives were different and the sata connections themselves. One was an HBA and the other stat ports on the motherboard. Certainly the limiting factor is the 1GB connection.
