So I upgraded to FreeNAS 11 2 weeks ago. Everything seems fine. One thing I noticed was a message that says "New features are available for volume media.
When I go to my storage volume it has a green arrow to upgrade my pool. I've gone to the user guide for FreeNAS 11 to see the performance or difference between this upgrade of the pool but don't seem to find anything on there. Can anyone explain the difference or performance I'm going to see. Will I lose my data? I'm waiting to upgrade until I get some clarification on this.

Thank you

These are the feature flags that have been added:
  • An updated version of ZFS includes new pool Feature Flags,, the skein and SHA512 hash functions.
If you google those features, both are faster hashing algorithms.

For what it's worth, those new feature flag upgrades are irreversible. Once you enable them, you can't go back to an earlier version of FreeNAS. Not a problem for many people, but if you're harboring any reservations about FreeNAS 11 and think you might want to downgrade someday, don't enable those new features.

They're tri-state. If you don't use them, you can still import the pool on older versions.

Note that this doesn't apply to all feature flags, but it does apply to the hash functions.
