Hi,

I'm looking to build a new freenas system. For my current purposes an i3-8100 seems to be perfect. cheap, 4 cores, ecc. Ideal for a home server and several jails.

Would it make sence to go the extra effort to pick up a 8100T (harder to get) which has a lower TDP for power efficiency (does a lower tdp i3-8100T actually use considerably less power?). All i see as difference is 500mhz lower clock on the T version @ 3.1ghz base. would it be worth underclocking an 8100?

Lower TDP CPUs save power by lowering speed, this is not saving over the long
haul however due to the lower speed causing the task at hand taking longer to
complete. In your case, the 8100 will complete the task quicker and return to idle that much quicker. The power saved by returning to idle will offset to slower speed "savings" of the 8100T.

From what people say, the chips like the 8100T are for one or both of these:
  • Power supplies with limited power
  • Enclosures that are designed for certain amount of heat / air flow
So in general, we don't recomend using such CPUs, (unless one or both of the conditions above applies).
