I suspect they're SOC based, i.e. intel.

I see no other big chips on the board other than the aspeed bmc.

Denverton is a SOC, and it would make sense for Intel to have a storage alternative when Xeon D only supports 6 ports and far too much compute for a simple storage node.

The article mentions the Sata ports share PCIe lanes. Other chipsets Intel has allow the integrator to flexibly choose the ratio of Sata/usb/PCIe.

With identify lights/buttons, this board is not supposed to be a toy.

Or not.

Either way, if you want 8+ disks in ITX right now you either need to use up the sole PCIe slot with an HBA or get the aged 2550/2750 atom Intel/marvel avaton from asus. Which uses interesting ram.

A Xeon D with an HBA is a cheaper solution

Been seriously considering a Node 304 with a Xeon D and *only* six drives as an alternative.

Avoton is three years old. And pricing has mostly gone up. This is a weird world we live in.

From what the article said, the PCIe lanes are shared with SATA ports.
Ideally you would be able to select 12 SATA and 4 lanes of PCIe, so you
could still have some expansion.

It would be annoying if your choices were;
  • 16 SATA ports and no PCIe lanes
  • 8 SATA ports & 8 lanes of PCIe
