Hello all,

After doing more digging on here, I'm kind of spooked about going the mirrored USB drive route for my FreeNAS install. I'm thinking of using the 2.5" SSD drive option and then possibly mirror it down the road. I'd prefer not spending $100 on a drive so I was curious what people have been using that are reliable and won't break the bank. I've searched on here and haven't come across any kind of consensus or recommendations on what to use. Thanks in advance!

Why would you be spooked about installing the software as recommended by the developers?

USB is fine

I was researching this subject last night and this drive was the cheapest and best rated small SSD on Newegg. I only searched for SATA3 so you might find a SATA2 cheaper.

@cyberjock turned me on to the older model Intel X25e SSD drives. You can find them cheap all the time on eBay and you can search for the
posts here in the forum to learn more about this little jewel. I now have purchased a total of three of them off ebay and they run
my pfSense machine and my FreeNAS server. Also, the 16GB SanDisk Crusier Fit (USB 2.0) comes highly recommended
by @DrKK who has many machines in production and swears by them. Then of course, you could go with an SSD DOM (disk on module),
and again a search in the forum, will give you lots of info about them. As far as a consensus, I really don't think you will find one on
this subject but I looked at the fact that ixSystems ships their FreeNAS Mini without a USB drive for the boot drive. I don't know why
they don't use a USB flash drive for the OS in these machines, but having the extra SATA ports needed for DOMs and SSD boot drives
are in most cases going to be the number one reason for going with a USB flash drive.
