Backup your config file and run a scrub on boot and verify on the installation. you may need a new boot drive.

Consider using a small and cheap SSD if practical.

The boot drive is completely independent of your data sir. You can even make a brand new bootable drive, and import your pool/config, and all will be as you left it.

This is why most of us use *TWO* usb drives to boot, when we use USB drives, for this very reason, since they are prone to failure.

So just to confirm following will be steps
  1. Backup the config with credentials seed from System->General->Save Config
  2. Prepare new USB with Freenas 11.1 on it
  3. Shutdown system
  4. Remove corrupt USB drive and replace it with new one from Step 1
  5. Start system & follow installation instructions
  6. Once started, go to admin console and import the saved config using Upload Config and all should be GOOD??
  7. If all looks good start the mirror boot drive process?

Well yes, except step #5, I'm not sure what you mean.

Here's what to do:
  1. System->General->Save Config; save your config. Power down.
  2. Boot the FreeNAS installation .iso, and install FreeNAS on a brand new thumb drive.
  3. Better yet, install it on *TWO* brand new thumb drives, preferably Sandisk Cruzer Fits, 16GB. Simply click BOTH boxes during installation.
  4. Remove corrupt boot thumb drive (Actually, this is not step 4, but rather, step 1a.)
  5. Insert new bootable thumb drive(s)
  6. Make sure your BIOS is set to actually boot those, and *NOT* your FreeNAS data hard drives
  7. Start FreeNAS
  8. Rejoice
  9. Import saved config
  10. Notice all is exactly as you left it, and all data magically reappears
  11. Rejoice in the power of FreeNAS.
  12. Respond to this post, expressing your joy.

Cruzer Blade crapped out, replaced with not one, but TWO Cruzer Fits. Then upped from U4 to U6. Then got REALLY brave and did the "irreversible" ZFS update thing. After all that, I STILL have a working NAS.

Ding, dong, the witch is dead.

I tried to find a good "rejoice" quote, and gave up. That's the only one I came up with. Thanks DrKK for your own personal 12 step program.:):):):)
