Well, I'd consult the manual for setting up CIFS.

Then for internet access look into a router that supports acting as a VPN server and setting that up.

I do have cifs setup. I just need the best way to access it across internet securely. So VPN would be good? Better than sftp? Thanks.

Well, you said "I need access to a cifs share via internet" and the best way to do that is via VPN.

And yes, I have read the manual. It describes SFTP. Which I can use, but to my understanding is not secure. So I will do as you suggest, and create a vpn.

SFTP has absolutely nothing to do with a CIFS share at all....

I never said that!
My question was what is the most secure way to access that share across internet.
The two FreeNAS options for secure are Webdisk style https or SFTP. Both can be done locally on a subnet and be very secure. It appears that VPN is a better solution, I can't believe I did not think of that first. The reason for me posting in a FreeNAS forum is because this is a FreeNAS server I am running.

I can tell this forum is full of smart-asses, just like Windows forums.

That is NOT what you asked. I'll quote you....

Basically I need access to a cifs share via internet, but has to be SSL.

You mentioned the protocol you want to use specifically. There is a different between saying "how do I use CIFS across the internet", which is what you asked, and asking "how can I share files across the internet?"

There are different answers to each of those questions. If you ask how to share files there are different options than being limited to CIFS only. If you don't like the answers then you should be more accurate with your questions. It's not our fault if you say you want CIFS but want us to realize you meant any protocol. You provided no hardware, no "intended use", no software version.. nothing.

Anyway, good luck.

Nope. You can use SSL per user or for SFTP. You can access a mapped drive via https using a users SSL cert, you don't need SFTP running to do so. That is why I said SSL. And that is why I asked for opinion for most secure. A person has to have CIFS setup on local network to access that drive via internet. So yes, that is the same.
I have a webpage that I use both SFTP and/or https webdisk to access. It can be accessed by either SSL type connection.

so we are the smart-asses because you didnt provide ANY info, didnt indicate how much you actually know (by the post it seems you dont really understand the terminology), and you expect us to provide you with some magical solution to a problem we dont fully understand?

OK....

get off your defensive high horse and help us help you, but with an attitude like that, i wouldnt expect much
