Hello,

This will be my first FreeNAS build.
I have just recently purchased this Supermicro Xeon D-1541 SoC setup: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182964 and I'm still within the 30 day return window.

With the announcement of the Intel Atom C3958 CPU, I wanted to ask to see whether I should keep my purchase or if I should switch to one of the new upcoming motherboards from Supermicro and others (such as this and this).

I've looked at some of the benchmarks and it seems like the 16 core Atom is coming pretty close to the Xeon's performance https://www.servethehome.com/intel-atom-c3955-16-core-top-end-linux-benchmarks-review/

The rest of my setup is the following:
  • 6x8TB WD Red
  • 64 GB DDR4 ECC RDIMM 2400 MHz RAM
  • EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G3
  • Fractal Design Node 304
I plan to use my NAS primarily for file storage and Plex.

Lastly, the Xeon D-1541 came out in Q4 of 2015. Is there a planned update for it sometime soon? I couldn't find anything in regards to this.

Thank you

If you want to use Plex, I'd keep the Xeon D which supports AVX2.

Coukd be significantly faster at transcoding.

Interesting. I'm guessing since this Atom CPU was just released yesterday, it will be a while before more benchmarks are released?

Why don't you ask Patrick at Servethehome.com to compare them for video encoding. Since has both of them ;)
