I'm a first-time user, and am quickly coming up to speed as I transition from an old NAS to a new FreeNAS machine. I got my SMB shares working, and read heavily about rsync. I got the transfer started, but missed a "/" in the command, so the files are being pushed to a different folder within the dataset. Will it be best to use a CLI command to simply change the file link - without having to copy 1tb around on the same hard drive, or will Windows or Linux file managers successfully do the same?

If you move it with a client machine you will in practice move everything to and from the client over the network.

It’s a breeze to move files locally on FreeNAS, simply log in with SSH and use the cli tools. You can do it in the web UI as well but it’s a bit more limited.

Learning some basic BSD cli file manipulation is always a good thing.
