I had some heat issues with my LSI SAS controller and drives kept disappearing - it cost me a motherboard. So I thought I'd share a quick tutorial on adding cooling fans to my controllers (there are two, one that runs ports 0-3, and the second for ports 4-7).

The heatsinks covering the LSI controllers were getting really hot (though I never found a command to display actual temp).

I added two 40x10 FLX fans. I used M3 x 12 screws and they fit between the fins on this 40mm heatsink pretty well. I had to slightly cant the fans, but not by much.

Afterward, so far so good. Everything booted and is happy, at present.

Probably not enough airflow in your chassis. These controllers put out some heat and the only way to cool that off, because of the tiny heatsync, is with significant airflow.

Yeah, most server motherboards with come with airflow requirements intended for a rack chassis. People placing these boards in ATX towers are throwing all of the cooling design out the window. It's not a bad thing, you just need to be aware of it. A non-contact temperature gun can be invaluable in setting such systems up. Also there just fun to play with!
