And my devices vary from 2GB to 20GB for the system dataset.

Thanks depasseg.
So as long I've got a config backup, then I shouldn't lose any config after a fresh install of FreeNAS and config restore where system dataset location is on the same boot disk?
I don't care about old debugging files, system logs and reporting information in this scenario.

That's correct. Config file and the same version of freenas and you are good to go.

Cool thanks.
When changing dataset location is the entire system dataset moved to the new location i.e. is there any need to do manual clean-up of left over files etc?

Nope. Everything gets copied over and then the source gets deleted. You don't have to do anything but wait.

First assumption is that your problem is the frequent disk writes. "how to do it" - second assumption is that you want to move the system dataset off your datadrives and based on the "new" GUI:

Go to System, System Dataset, and choose your preferred location on the top line System Dataset Pool. I presume you will choose "freenas-boot".

If this were my system I would only choose to do this if my boot pool was on an SSD (or even a small HDD). I would not do it if booting from a USB because of their lack of reliability.

Hello and thank you

that's it, I have very frequent writes on a storage disk since the migration
I went from 9.2 to 9.3 then to 11.2U8
a few days ago

I just did the manipulation it was much simpler than I thought and I was looking to do

I have an SSD for boot
(it will not create problems for him so many writes?)

and poqroi on the old versions of freenas there were not these repetitive writings

and why on the old versions of freenas there were not these repetitive writings?

if I deactivate the syslog there will be no more writing, which must be better

This post may help you work some of this out: https://www.ixsystems.com/community...ardless-of-where-the-system-dataset-is.46374/

Here's what's in one of my system's dataset:

As to why (not) - the answer might be the samba4 data as referenced by ericloewe's comment, but I'm not sure.
