Confused about JBOD used with a UPS

I have a JBOD that is connected to my FreeNAS PC that is set up with my UPS, but how exactly does the JBOD know to shut down? How do I include the JBOD in the communication between the PC and UPS?

The JBOD doesnt need to know. As long as both pc and JBOD run from the UPS powersource, and the PC has the UPS communication, then in case of power loss the ups tells the pc to shutdown gracefully and then there is no activity on the JBOD when the pc is off. So when UPS runs out of power the JBOD will just shutdown. No harms done.
Its just important that both cases draws power from the UPS.
