I'm considering using a couple of IBM M1015 or an LSI 9201-16 with FreeNAS. It seems there are some people who are using the IBM, but I can't find either of them on the FreeBSD compatibility list. How well (if at all) do these work? I'm not experienced with BSD (or Linux for that matter), so hopefully it isn't too hard to get them to work if its possible.

Good that you looked them up on the hardware compatability list, but I'd suggest you google "FreeNAS M1015". There has been much discussion about that card.

I did a search, and it seems the IBM controller should work. However, I'm unsure of how they got it to work (beyond reflashing firmware). There is drivers for FreeBSD 6.3 & 7.0 that I can find on the LSI page, but I have no idea if those will work with FreeNAS (which is based on FreeBSD 8.3 according to the documentation).

There was BSD drivers for my Adaptec 1430 SATA controllers too, but those needed compiling, which is beyond my limited knowledge. I'm hoping it would be easier this time around :)

I would really like to ditch Windows with this server upgrade.

I'm pretty sure the controller will just work, if the driver is already in the kernel it will recognize it and load the driver. If there is a non-raid bios to flash I would definitely do that as well.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm about to order 2 IBM M1015 cards.

I'm also getting an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0, AMD FX 4100 CPU, 16GB ECC RAM and Norco 4220 case. People who have tried FreeNAS with these components seems satisfied so I don't expect any problems.
