I have been running FreeNAS 8.3 for a few months now and initially everything worked great. I got the entire configuration done easily and it was working great for a little while. After a few weeks I started having a problem accessing the share within windows. It appeared that after a reboot or loss of power I couldn’t always find it through my network. After turning off CIFS and back on the problem would usually go away. This all reached critical mass last week when I could not get it to work again. I re-verified my settings (user, share, permissions etc) and they are all still correct. I desperately needed some files off the NAS so I tried using FTP and it worked without a hitch.

Looking at the console it appears (to my eyes anyway) that it may have to do with Samba:

Another forum post that sounded similar in nature was traced back to a bad flash drive. So I followed the instructions there, backed up my config file, and reinstalled onto a different flash drive. After restoring the config file I was still having the same problem.
I can ‘SEE’ the share in windows (win7 ultimate x64) on two separate PCs but cannot connect.

TIA!

Reading other forum about Samba and Freebsd, it's seems to be a timing problem. I solved this problem with this little workaround: I created this little single line post init script: "sleep 60; service samba restart".

With "sleep 60" I give 60 seconds to Freenas to complete network interface set up. With "service samba restart" I restart samba over a completely set up network interface.
