For quite a while I have been annoyed by transfers between my Windows 10 machine and TrueNAS server stopping/starting/freezing and being slow. I looked at everything I could find on the network side with no results.
The problem is Windows Real-time protection.
I went into Windows Security/Virus & threat protection settings and turned Real-time protection OFF. The performance improvement was night and day.
The only problem is that the setting turns itself back on after a time. It is easy to tell when it does - the network transfers start crawling again.
