Hello, I am using an HP DL380p Gen 8 server that I had gotten from work to run and play around with FreeNAS. I currently have two E5-2640 CPUs in there but was able to get my hands on the E5-2640 V2 CPUs.

I was wondering how I would update the chipset of the system in order to let it work with the v2's.

If anyone could lend a hand that would be great. Thank you

The chipsets are soldered on the motherboard. You update them by purchasing a new motherboard.

I think the G8's support E5-2600 and E5-2600 V2 as well. You may need to update the BIOS first, and make sure the motherboard supports the TDP (wattage drawn). I would get the most up to date firmware update/smart update DVD you can and run all that prior to trying to replace the CPU's. I don't know that for sure, but I think the G8's have the same CPU support as the Cisco UCS M3's that I am using now. I abandoned HP to go Cisco after the G7's, so that is just a guess.

Edit: Google HP DL380 G8 quick specs. That PDF should tell you for sure if that board supports the CPU's you want to use.

Thank you. They do support the V2s but the two that I tried to install both came back as errors. I can figure out how to update the bios. I’ve never done it before but should be able to find out how. Thank you.
