Ok I'll admit this is a really dumb question.

I changed root password through login console

After doing that I ssh into main FreeNAS installation as a regular user. As the user I type "su" and then enter the password -- however it keeps saying bad password.
Do I need to reboot system for password to take effect? I'm kind of confused.

To clarify, you typed 2 commands:
su password (when prompted)

and not all at once?

su password

If so, is this on 11.2-U7?

Did you try to use the old password, as a test, or only the new password?

Tbh in thought I knew the password but everything I typed didn't work. I figured I'd just change the password which led to the problem I'm reporting. I tried repeating the process three days or four times but got same outcome. Only thing I didn't try was a reboot. I also from main console didn't login as another user to try logging in as su. My sudo user works but that authenticates against user password and not root password.
