I have been running my celeron for awhile and I have pretty much forgotten about my server and its been great. I use it mainly for a file server and PLEX. I recently upgraded my HTPC computer to an i5 and now I have a i3 4170 sitting around doing nothing. I was thinking about upgrading my FreeNas server with the i3, but did not know if it was worth it or not from a performance stand point. If I don't upgrade to the i3, I can sell it on ebay for about $100.

The i3 is almost 1000MHz faster and can do hyper threading.
Thats a pretty nice upgrade for $100, since it's already paid for;)

I would wait until you need an upgrade and then get a Xeon ;)

I would also say, upgrade to the i3 if there socket and mainboard compatible ( I dont want to search now xD)
I dont think you need more cpu resources, so you dont need a Xeon yet.
For a new purchase, I would go to the Xeon (I did the same), beacause I wanted to have ECC support.
