As the title suggests, I'm not able to start a FreeNAS installation (from a CD)

The boot sequence starts and I get past the options for selecting multi or single user (automatically).
But then after a while it starts throwing me the following error:

(cd0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): Error 5, Unretryable error
(cd0:umass-sim0:0:0:0): cddone: got error 0x5 back

My system's specs are as follows:

Motherboard: ASRock FM2A85X-ITX
CPU: AMD A4 5300 3.40 GHz
RAM: 1x 8GB Crucial 1600 CL11
Case: Fractal Design Node 304
PSU: Seasonic G Series 450W
Storage: 1x WD Red 1TB (System), 4x WD Red 3TB (RAID)

Anyone able to shed some light on this? :)

Cheers,

M.

First, Why would you install FreeNAS to a 1TB hard drive? The extra space will be unusable and that hard drive will only burn more watts and add more heat.

Second, you can avoid that problem by installing directly to a USB stick. Follow the manual for installing to USB stick via an img file.

Why a USB stick? I find it a bit weird having one stick out of the machine all the time... :)
I presume I could get a cheap SSD instead, 32GB should be more than enough to last me for a while, right?

I'll have a look through your guide as well, still pretty new to FreeNAS.

And you can buy a $5 converter so the USB stick connects to your inside USB connector. Or you get one of those low profile USB sticks. Still doesn't justify (to me at least) why you'd use a 1TB drive in such an awkward situation. There's plenty of other(cheap) options to solve your feelings about having a USB stick sticking out.
