I'm trying to get Crashplan working to backup my Windows 10 computer user files to my Freenas. I've installed CP 4.5.2 on the Windows computer and edited ui.properties.

After installing CP in it's own jail I tried to navigate to the .ui_info but can't find it per http://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/4/Configuring/Using_CrashPlan_On_A_Headless_Computer Step 1.

Getting the headless CP to work makes Moby Dick look like a short story. I ended up using VirtualBox to run a virtual Ubuntu and full CrashPlan instead.

Nonetheless, here are some notes:

  1. Are you sure that the Crashplan on the NAS is at 4.5.2? The plugin default is 3.6.3 and it doesn't like to update itself. You can test the NAS by going into the jail (from the console GUI or ssh/jls) and running: cat /usr/pbi/crashplan-amd64/share/crashplan/log/history.log.0

^^ This is a CP jail in my NAS that's been running for several months (years?) and refuses to upgrade itself.
  2. Might as well check out the engine log: more /var/log/crashplan/engine_output.log
  3. The file you're looking for is here: more /var/lib/crashplan/.ui_info <== but note it only gets created if your NAS/Crashplan is at version 4.x or above. This is likely why it's missing on your machine. So there's no way to connect to your NAS/CP until you downgrade your PC's version of CP.
Again, headless won't work unless your CP server (NAS) and client (PC) are the same version. And because the NAS/CP doesn't want to update itself unless it gets minimally configured by the client CP; you can run into a Catch-22 unless you can find an old 3.6.3 client somewhere to configure the headless NAS/CP server properly.

See why even thought it took a full day, it was easier to run a VirtualBox / Ubuntu virtual machine in my NAS? The only caveat is that you need the extra CPU/RAM/diskspace to run the VM.

RoboKaren,
Thanks for your help. I'm running 3.6.3 on Freenas and it doesn't give an option to update. It looks like I won't have time to read Moby Dick <G>. I'll try to find an old version of CP 3.6.3 .

There's another thread on how to manually upgrade to 4.5.2. This is now the preferred method.

Never got the updated version to work. I downloaded the old 3.6.3 from your link and ended up getting it to work. Had to tweak a few things to get it to work with my PRO account, but it's currently beavering away backing up about 3.2TB at 9Mb/s.

I see huge fluctuations though. Sometimes I see 15Mb/s sometimes 1.2Mb/s. It's a bit all over the place.
