seeing /dev/mfi and /dev/pass devices.

Drives can be presented as individual "JBOD" via a HW RAID controller and some think that they aren't using HW RAID, when they actually are. In this case though, the LSI does look like it's in IT mode, but I'm not sure about the H730.

I think there is an issue with the driver and H730 controller combo. And either a physical issue between the LSI and the MD1400, or an incompatibility with the MD1400.

For testing I have now removed the H730 form the machine, and put 4 of the drives form the server in the MD1400 shelf. The remaining drive are disconnected from the server as well.

Are you saying that there may be a problem with the LSI talking to the MD1400 at this point? Would you suggest manual partition and volume creation on the drives to see if they are addressable by the base OS?

It's possible that there is a compatibility issue with the LSI, MD1400 and FreeBSD. What's the output of camcontrol devlist -v?

That looks good. Can you use the GUI to create a 12 disk vdev (or 2 6's) as a test?

I'm assuming that you mean use the web GUI, click on "Volume Manager" and create a volume? If so, then that is the issue that brought me here in the first place.
This is in the messages log:
manage.py: [middleware.exceptions:37] [MiddlewareError: Unable to GPT format the disk "da0"] Along with a whole host of ILLEGAL REQUEST messages from the driver. I can post them but they are essentially the same as the ones that I have posted before.

Hmm. Can you trying wiping those disks? The simplest and fastest way I know is to use gpart destroy -F da0 (through da11). And then confirm the partitions are all clear with gpart show.
Let's try to figure out this MD1400 issue and then move to the H730 and IT mode issue.

My bad, try /dev/da0 I didn't feel like testing that command on my drives.

That could be the case. Maybe try to create a partition manually to see if it's possible (as you guessed a couple hours ago).

I think the invalid argument is due to the drives not having any partitions set. The gpart show is at the bottom of my last message.
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you need to run the command with the full device spec: /dev/da0 etc. We can't see the 'gpart show' results for any devices except da12.

EDIT: I'm wrong; you don't need to specify the /dev/ prefix with the gpart command. Carry on...

I understand this is an old thread but I ran into a similar situation with similar hardware and was able to solve it by formatting my drives with the following command and rebooting FreeNAS. After that I was able to create volumes using webUI:

Code:
sg_format --format --fmtpinfo=0 /dev/daX
