Can we go back a few versions please?

Firstly - I love FreeNAS and the stuff the devs do. I really really do appreciate it.

I have to wonder though - have the devs been pushed into releasing the last few versions to soon?

The last 3 upgrades have all introduced pretty horrible bugs - which are not fixed in the subsequent releases - and just seem to bring a huge amount of instability to the platform.

I've just upgraded to 9.10.1-U1 and it's flaky as hell.
  • Cannot create jails. Kept getting browser console errors (sorry! I did not capture them)
  • Jail DHCP still not working
  • pkg update no longer works (in main or in jail) (See below)

I'm only one day in on the upgrade and really struggling to like it.

A brand new jail called WebDev
Code:
root@WebDev:/ # pkg update
Updating FreeBSD repository catalogue...
Repository FreeBSD has a wrong packagesite, need to re-create database
pkg: http://pkg.FreeBSD.org/freebsd:10:x86:64/latest/meta.txz: No address record
repository FreeBSD has no meta file, using default settings
pkg: http://pkg.FreeBSD.org/freebsd:10:x86:64/latest/packagesite.txz: No address record
Unable to update repository FreeBSD

Not a tongue-in-cheek question - how can I downgrade? I don't mind missing a few versions.

Kudos to the devs for their effort. Pitty about the testing.

Select a previous boot environment from the boot tab, activate it and reboot.

"pkg update" should not be expected to work in FreeNAS either. If you have installed packages previously into your FreeNAS OS, that is very likely a major issue on your system.

I haven't experienced these errors with 9.10.1 but I haven't tried updating to 9.10.1u1 and don't plan on it.

Last 3 upgrades? I agree that both 9.10.1 releases look like a train wreck, but what was wrong with 9.10-20160627? I'm planning to upgrade to it this weekend, so my question isn't academic. :)

@pirateghost I've two running - one which was upgraded (and is not stumbling along) and one brand new install yesterday (which is also flaky)

pkg has always worked in jails. It does not now. To be fair, I am not sure if it ever did in FreeNAS itself as everything I do I do in jails. I thought I had installed screen but see that it's in by default so not sure.
Nonetheless, it's bust in jails.

As for the last 3 - I think so. See my previous thread here: https://forums.freenas.org/index.ph...-after-recent-update.45447/page-2#post-308785
Sadly, this did not get fixed either.

I'm going to rollback the both servers and see how it goes. Failing that I'll dig out the original iso I used to install and go back to when networking worked :)

I never said pkg shouldn't work in jails. It works fine in my jails on 9.10.1. What I said was the base OS. You should not and never should have been allowed to use pkg commands in the base OS.

They released new firmware drivers without ever checking to see if new firmware was available. Long story, but ultimately it shows a pattern of a lack of testing and pushing releases to soon for unknown reasons. The last update is why I didn't upgrade this week and it looks like I dodged a headache!

Yes, and that bug is in 9.10.1, not 9.10, which one of the reasons I said the 9.10.1 releases have been a mess.

No, they knew perfectly well that no new firmware was available. This is not a matter of a driver having been released prematurely, it's a matter of a vendor's having incremented a driver's version number (probably inappropriately). The only bug is that the GUI gives a warning about it.
