Hi
I hope you are well, I need a bit of help. When I am trying to install TrueNas on my old dell laptop(in specs), I can not restart. I have followed all the steps that are on the YouTube channel. Can you please help me?

Here is a video of what I see.
What I mean by referencing the steps is using the video provided by the devs.

Try selecting the number (or scroll to line and press space bar to select), then tab to OK, enter

Laptops and USB drives are a bad combination with TrueNAS. But have you finished the installation, and then it won't reboot (sorry, "followed the steps in the video by the devs" really tells us nothing about what you did, or where you are in the process)? If that's the case, you could always just power-off the computer, remove the installer USB, then power it back on.

I'm a high school student, and I want to learn a bit more about servers, and all I have right now is my old laptop. Eventually, I am planning to get my own server.

your experience on this will probably not be very good TBH, but if you are just starting out it is something i guess.
if you are just testing, it is a good idea to include that, since we see many people trying to run on the strangest hardware or software setups and losing data because of it.
otherwise, a reboot is worth trying.
it looks like something weird is going on, probably related to something specific to that laptop, or because something is failing.
perhaps you could try attaching a USB keyboard and see if it does anything different.
aditionally, which drive did you try to install to? if you try to boot off the (USB?), you might find issues. it might be more reliable to use the HDD, depending on how it connects (internal SATA probably?)

I have tried using an external keyboard, and I am installing it onto the onboard HDD(aka the original) I am booting it off the installer which is on the USB and trying to install it to the hard drive.

If I get an M.2 SSD do you think it would change anything?

trying to install it to the hard drive.
Why are you trying to install an OS that takes a few GB onto a 1 TB HDD? And again, what exact steps have you taken (tell us, don't just point to a video), and at what exact step are you getting stuck?

As I stated a bit earlier, this is my current config, so I don't have anything smaller right now.(considering getting an SSD for my boot drive)
The point where I am getting stuck is not being able to restart. Another thing I have noticed is if I click anything other than it would just want to select option one. I will upload a video later on exactly what is happing so you could see.

If I get an M.2 SSD for my boot, what size( in GB) should I get?

No, don't upload a video. Use your words. Type. You say you're not able to restart, but that doesn't tell us why you want to. Have you run the installation, had it finish, and now want to restart (which is what I asked you on Saturday)? If that's where you are, have you done what I suggested on Saturday, and just powered off the computer, removed the installer USB stick, and then powered it back on?

what size( in GB) should I get?
No smaller than 30 GB.

that seems....a bit harsh (as someone who tends to be severe)
they said they are a high school student trying to learn, and so expecting them to understand everything we do seems...unrealistic.

if simply restarting doesn't work, I would suggest:
  1. get a 30GB+ (make sure it's compatible, there are a few different types, because screw standards) m.2
  2. get a 8GB+ usb stick
  3. put the installer on the usb stick
  4. boot from the usb stick and install to the m.2
  5. boot from the m.2 and use the 1TB to make your test pool
  6. experiment with replication to the portable USB (the USB will not perform well)
  7. ????
  8. win!?

If you say so. I expect a high school student to be able to communicate in complete sentences, and indeed he's demonstrated his ability to do so. It's a perfectly simple question that he's been asked very clearly, twice over the last three days. He just needs to answer it--and if the answer is what I suspect it is (which I've mentioned twice), he then needs to try the resolution I've suggested twice. There's no need for a video, and no benefit to a video--this forum is a text-based medium, and I doubt there are many who will watch a video to answer what could easily have been done in a sentence or two.

Danb35,
Yes, I ran the full installation, then I left it on the installation menu, as I could not reboot, and it has been sitting next to my router since then.

*Here is a tip for you
Don't be harsh or demanding in a community, people may just want to learn, and they may not be able to learn when there is a harsh tone used as it may discourage people from talking there again or asking for help.

Well I have an update
I have bought a 128 GB M.2 Boot Drive, installed it, then ran the installer one more time. After that. Still the same issue, so I disconnected it, forced it to shut down, and it booted like normal into the "Welcome screen"
