Hey all, total nubs here. I've never installed anything like this before but here goes...

I've installed FreeNAS 8.2 and activated AFP (and SSH) under services. I've added volumes as best as I know how and configured everything that seemed obvious.

My 2011 mac-mini (OS X 10.8.1) _sees_ the freenas shared but fails to connect. I can ssh into my nas box and surf around... but AFP keeps failing me.

Any ideas as where I may have con astray during my install?

Thanks!

I'm having what might be a similar problem. I have setup a new FreeNAS box (not my first one) and configured AFP shares. When connecting from Finder I can get successful login and presented with list of volumes. I select a volume and click OK and am then prompted second time for password (only, not username). I enter password again and then get a 'permission denied' error.

Comparing it to another FreeNAS box I can't find anything different with the config. What is the best way to troubleshoot this problem?

Did you create the users that can access to this AFP share?, other option is to accept anonymous logins on your shares, but this last thing at your own risk :p

@cngarrison Did you put a share password on the AFP share? Take a look in the AFP share options on FreeNas GUI.

I had created a couple of users. I created a third user that worked. Apart from the username & primary group, the only difference between them was the password. I changed first user to a longer (8 chars) password and login works now. This user wants their 'normal' password; is there any reason why a 6 char password would not work?

I've not had time to do further testing, but it certainly appears at this point to be an issue with password length. Is that a known feature/bug?

No, there is no share password on the AFP share.

Thanks for your help.

I don't know if there is a policy restriction to password length.I always use a password > 8 characters, and force all my users to follow this policy. Call me freak ;D

I agree with you. :D

But that doesn't mean I can always convince clients, especially when they claim to be in a closed environment. (They conveniently forget that phone line going into the wall.) ;)

Anyway, I'll do more testing to confirm that's the problem, and if so then tell them they have to use a longer password. I'm still not convinced that is the problem since the password is requested twice during login.
