Hi,

I am about to buy IBM server system ( IBM System x3100 M4) to build NAS, but still wondering if FreeNAS is able to run on IBM System.

Any comment / recommendation ?

Thank you in advance,
Chai

Does it meet our hardware requirements per the wiki?

Thanks for your reply, cyberjock.

The general hardware requirement is met, but the thing that confuse me is a server spec. on IBM website, regarding Operating systems support.

Let me quote it:
"Operating systems supported: Microsoft Windows Server 2012/Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2/Microsoft Windows Server 2008, SBS 2011, Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux"

As I know, FreeNAS is based on BSD.
Since BSD is not in that list, so I am not sure if it support FreeNAS

Thank you

I am running freenas on a x3630. If the specs are similar you should be fine.

Regards.

Generally if it runs FreeBSD and you have 8GB of RAM minimum FreeNAS should run. The problem is that quite often if FreeBSD isn't listed it won't work. There are plenty of exceptions. If you own the hardware it doesn't hurt to try. But I wouldn't commit to the hardware unless you are 100% certain FreeNAS boots and such.

I prefer to build my systems because then you have total control of all aspects of the build.
