Hello,
I was researching this and it seems that you can install ventrilo on the old version of FreeNAS but no news on this current version. Has anyone been successful in installing it?

Thanks!

I wrote the FreeNAS 7 Extension for Ventrilo. I don't have much experience with FreeNAS 8, but from what I understand they no longer run FreeBSD as the base OS. So the link that was provided wouldn't even be viable for what we're talking about. I'd like to say that it wouldn't even be that hard to look into developing an Extension or whatever they call them now for FreeNAS 8. However upon my inspection of FreeNAS 8 about six months ago I was also not inclined to use it over 7..

I don't see how anything to do with FreeNAS 8 would be in competition legally in the slightest with what Flagship Industries has stated. Only if the initial server files were included as a part of FreeNAS 8 or an install package would there be an issue. Which is why in the Extension I wrote I forced the user to download those files from Flagship Industries so they could read the agreement for them self.

To be honest the lack of helpfulness on the responding part of this thread upset me enough that I might even be willing to help get this running of my own free will. In my opinion that style of answer is exactly why there is such a split between FreeNAS 7 and 8. It seems that a lot has been lost with those whom have supposedly taken over FreeNAS's development.

No, no it is not. I've used it. It's significantly less intuitive. To the point where I actually think it's confusing. Not to mention it's a resource hog for what it is. It actually lags me less to have a 5 person video conference over Skype than it does to use the username overlay feature which I think is enabled by default..

Don't get me wrong.. I think it's a great piece of software, but.. still just a runner up to Ventrilo. We do need something that's open source to take over in Ventrilo's place though. The 8 person cap on free servers is a little annoying to those with a decent internet connection.

I just have never experienced lag on mumble, I run it on ubuntu usually, though I've never had problems with it on my Windows 7 laptop either. K, don't want to argue over it since it our own opinions, to each there own.

That's because you weren't running it on a Pentium D! :D LOL When you have to scrap for each CPU cycle it makes a difference. It's not my main box, but I still have it.

You could compile Vent in a jail and use it. ;)

I wrote a step-by-step guide for Mumble(which is basically vent but with better security from eavesdropping and better quality voice codecs).

Oh, my.. just stop with this Mumble stuff when it's not what the thread is about.. how about you help people with what they're asking instead? Mumble is not as good as Ventrilo in any way aside from a slightly less "classic" theme for the client, more options, and open source. There have been many, many comparisons done on this. Ventrilo is still number one where voice chat latency, and in some cases quality is concerned. The voice codecs that allow for a "better" quality, which is incredibly marginal, require more bandwidth, data transmission time, and decoding. Ventrilo found a perfect balance from what I had read. Not to mention that some of the comparison tests for Mumble against Ventrilo even used Ventrilo servers to connect with better results. I haven't looked into it for a long time, but something tells me that nothing has changed otherwise a FREE option would have taken over..

LOL.. whatever dude.

So I checked your history, last post was April 2012. I had less than 50 posts in April 2012. I've used both Vent and Mumble, and I didn't force it on you. I provided some advice.

Also, as supa told me he didn't mean to necro this thread, I'm locking it.

Good day to you!
