Hi,

I use a SSD with plenty of free space as my boot device.
Is there a way to place the dataset, log files and netatalk CNID database on that?

Thanks,
Heinz

That's why there are lots of mentions in the documentation that large boot devices are a waste, since you can't put anything else on them. For the 9.2.x series, people generally used a USB stick for their boot device.

As of 9.3 (with a ZFS boot device), they're recommending mirroring your boot device. USB is still fine, though not especially encouraged due to the difficulty in finding a USB stick that isn't terrible. If you've got the SATA ports, SATA DOMs are nice and small and more reliable than USB, but relatively hard to come by. SSDs are easier to come by, but take up more space.
