Hello I bought a motherboards Gigabyte N3050M-D3P, Corsair 4GB, DDR3, 1600MHz (total cost $ 64) and I have a WD Blue 3TB HDD. my question is what version of freenas to use? (it's my first build)
I will only use it for file server + Transmission. Thank you.

  • I will be the first to say that you should read the Hardware Recommendations Guide
  • ECC RAM/support is not required but highly recommended.
  • 4GB of RAM is not enough to run FreeNAS as the minimum recommendation is 8GB
  • Using 1 drive will not give you any redundancy which in my opinion is quite an important feature of FreeNAS and ZFS in general.

Your use case does not seem very demanding. Are you sure FreeNAS is the right application for you? Don't use software just because it's cool. Make sure you get/need the advantages that the software offers. For your use case, you could simply set up an Ubuntu/Debian/Archlinux bare minimum install (without Xorg) and use that as a file server and transmission-cli installed on it.

You can not use FreeNAS on this hardware.
It doesn't come close to the minimum spec.

You really ought to have at least 2 hard disks, 2 cheap 16GB USB sticks and 8GB of memory - then you'll be ok.
