Hello Everyone

I've got a planned build parts list below and was hoping someone could take a quick look at it to be sure I'm not making any obvious mistakes on my first build. This will be a home server used primarily for photo storage, media archives, incoming backup data from other machines, etc. Should never be used by more than a couple people at a time.

I'm planning to use 6 3TB drives in RAIDZ2. I will not be using encryption.

Case: NZXT Source 210 S210-001
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146075

PSU: Antec BP550 Plus 550W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016

PSU: SeaSonic SSR-450RM 450W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151124

Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCL-F-O
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182251

Motherboard: SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SLM-F-O uATX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182820

RAM: Kingston 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1600 (probably 2x for 16GB total)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239370

RAM: Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148770

CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 Haswell
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117374

Storage medium: 6x WD Red 3TB NAS
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008JJLW4M/?tag=ozlp-20

Any tips/suggestions/warnings would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Edit 7/29: Updated with new proposed parts

whoops.

Sir, the X9SCL, if memory serves is a socket 1155. The G3258 is a socket 1150.

no?

Yes I have just confirmed this. I suggest you get an X10SLM, and use that CPU.

Also, just so you know, you will get at least one obligatory "Hey, that is not a Seasonic PSU!!!!". Anytime anyone uses non-Seasonic PSU's, someone will complain. It's up to you to decide if you care.

Also, might I suggest that you ditch that ugly-ass case, and get this remarkably awesome case that is currently 30% off? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112300 You'll thank me later. That's money well spent.

I'll complain, but not because it's not Seasonic. I'll complain because it's overpriced, inefficient (80 Plus Gold should really be the standard these days) and probably an older design.

Standard recommendation is a Seasonic G-550, but feel free to suggest something else for the forum's opinion.

1. They linked the wrong case in the OP. The link takes you to the NZXT Phantom and they chose the Source 210 which is a nice box.
2. For the love of God, NO! never ever use the LianLi V354 for a server!!! I have it and it's a TERRIBLE server case. I only have it because I'm recycling it from a previous HTPC build - my next box will be a Define R4 or R5. The entire drive cage must be removed to swap out just one drive, there is no quick release mechanism! Second, to get the side panel off you must unscrew eight tiny screws! It looks beautiful (I have the brushed aluminum) but it's not practical for a server.

Sir, anything that's beautiful will always be a pain in the butt. This applies throughout life.

The Antec PSU he picked seems a very very odd choice. It's old, it's expensive, it's overpowered, it's inefficient. I wonder if the OP is getting advice from his awesome friend who says that Antec is T3h b3st l33tsauce PSU.

:)

In any case, at this price point, OP, you can get a much better power supply, and should do so.

Kingston has acquired a less than stellar reputation in this forum lately, so sourcing your RAM elsewhere (e.g. Crucial) might be a good idea.

You know, after saving the OP from buying the wrong motherboard for his CPU, you'd think he might have gotten back to us with some words of thanks and what his plan would now be...?

One observation I've made is that people who ask for help in this forum are disproportionately likely to be leaving on vacation/work for a week or more right after asking.

Maybe it's just some psychological effect, but I've always found it rather unusual.

Thanks everyone! Haven't yet finalized a revised parts list, but I will be posting one (and likely a few additional questions) soon.

Oops. Thanks for catching that. I owe you a gyro. X10SLM it is.

The Antec PSU was picked pretty much at random after a couple minutes of skimming through Newegg ratings. I’m not at all attached to it.

Alright, how about a SeaSonic 450? If there are any issues with that, I’ll happily go with your recommendation of the G-550, but it seems like I shouldn’t need that much power, right?

DrKK, your suggested case is beautiful, but I think I’m going to stick with my original plan on this one. The machine’s going to sit where I’ll never see it, so looks don’t matter to me.

How about Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1600?

Also one more thing. The G3258 will not POST on this board with the original version 1.0 BIOS. Now, 98% of people buying this board straight from Newegg are getting the new BIOS and everything is cool. But, just a heads up...you can't update the BIOS without a CPU that works...in the very unlikely chance that you get an older board.

Well, you can, but Supermicro gets 20 bucks. :p

nonononnoono.

The X10 series motherboard will support 1333 or 1600 no problem. It will support DDR3 and DDR3L no problem. I use DDR3L 1333 on mine. If the CPU won't support 1600 and you put in 1600 RAM? No problem, it'll run it at 1333. etc., none of these are a problem.

You were fine with the RAM you had and the CPU you had. Any pentium, and appropriate DDR3/DDR3L UDIMM ECC that we've been discussing will be just fine. Trust me.

Thanks for the help, everyone. Parts are now on their way. DrKK, your gyro offer is redeemable from Monday to Friday at your local lunch gyro bar, when available.
