First time playing with FreeNAS though I have read up on it quite a bit in the passed few months. This build is going to serve as a primary backup for a family and small business, as well as host our massive movie collection for streaming to a TV.
Going to be starting off with 3 HDDS in a RAIDZ and add another 3 when the time comes. Justification for the White Label drives is that they are far cheaper than brand name and I have heard plenty of good things about them.
The UPS will have our router and a workstation plugged into it and will mainly be used as a surge protector and to gracefully shut down the FreeNAS box.

EDIT: realized I screwed up the RAM selection

The chance that during an rebuild you get an URE is very high.
If its data redownloadable go with raidz2, if its family photos go with raidz2 and do backups!

You may search the forum.
There are plenty threads, also with calculations of failure rates

Part of the problem is a $1000 budget for the NAS, with the ability to expand from 4TB in the future without the need for additional equipment.

It's your choice.
You should have backups either way.

Data on a single disk or raid is like having no data.

If you can live with all data gone, its definitely ok.
But don't be angry if its really gone

If I had it my way, we'd be buying a used 1U or 2U server off of eBay, flashing the raid card, and buying a bunch of drives. But in addition to price, it needs to be small enough to fit on a shelf above a desk.

No matter what the raid ends up being, we will also be doing nightly or weekly backups through crashplan.
