My boot drive died last night and the only backup i can find is a database file from 2020
is there any way i can save the data on the storage disks after i do a fresh install on my new boot disk?

Of course: import the pool. That's why the boot device is separate.

There are scripts around that will email you a copy of the config every (insert time period). It makes rebuilding the boot-pool a lot easier having a copy of the config

TrueNAS (and FreeNAS before that) has been saving a daily backup of the config database in the .system dataset for ages. Takes some digging around to get it, though.

Yeah - but I can never remember where and having a daily email soves that problem completely

in a folder at /var/db/system/configs-"a big number"

saved daily at 03h45.

I suggest winscp to get to it (from a windows client, that is, anyway): One of mine today

Copy the file for the day you need to /data/freenas-v1.db
