I have a new Freenas machine I am testing before retiring WHS. I have 2x 256 Samsung SSD. Initially I was planning to mirror them for Jails (Plex + Sabnzbd) with Sab downloading / extracting to this mirror before moving to my storage pool. Plex would also use this for transcoding.

Given the high likelihood of concurrent read / write I am thinking maybe I should not do this and not mirror the SSD but should perhaps use them individually with plugins + download/incomplete on the first drive and the second for transcode + download/complete. This is so that during unrar it would read from one and write to the other.

Does this make sense? I have a thirs Samsung 840 64gb in an old machine I could use as a dedicated transcode drive if splitting the read / write between operations would improve performance.

I run two SSDs mirrored and I have no issues whatever doing it that way. My setup is basically identical to what you plan. The mirror SSD pool runs all my jails stuffs as you are want to do, then things that need to be filed away into spinning disks are auto moved and archived. I see no issues with this at all. Having two single drive pools one reading one writing adds a layer of complexity that I am just not sure is necessary. You have to figure that those drives are capable of 500mb/s. I cant imagine you needing any more than that concurrent reading writing or not. You can certainly do it both ways, but the real question is do you need to? On that I say no. Run it as you originally planned. Anything gained in performance I suspect will be severely limited by your WAN/LAN connection(s) anyways. Good luck.

I agree the drives are plenty fast enough that splitting them up just adds more complexity, while losing redundancy.
I suggest mirror ssd, use as pooln for jails, which by default would be where plex transcodes to. then just configure your sabnzbd incomplete/compete folders as you said.
