I have a supermicro mortherboard with Xeon 5600 in a chassis with 12 1TB drives. These drives are all hooked up to an LSI RAID card that is flashed to IT mode for zfs. Is it best to install FreeNAS to a usb stick? Its been a little while since I installed FreeNAS from scratch and I don't remember installing to USB. Seems I installed right to the drives.

I successfully installed to the USB stick, but the FreeNAS GUI is very slow.

Thanks,

Greg

Prior to v9.3, which uses ZFS and can utilize the entire storage space on a boot device, it was common to install FreeNAS onto a USB flash drive. Now days, in addition to using flash drives, some users are using small SSD's and/or SATA DOM's.

Even if you use a flash drive, the reads shouldn't be slow.

Please list your complete hardware environment, including network gear. Perhaps you have a bad cable or network issue causing the slowdown.

My new system seems to be performing much better once the setup was done and the system settled down. I just couldn't remember if FreeNAS installed on the zpool or a dedicated device. Like I said, it's been awhile since I installed FreeNAS.

Thanks again!
