I am currently developing a backup strategy for my XenServer.
My plan was to setup a FreeNAS server in another rack on my site and attach it to XenServer using iSCSI.
I also want to have an offline backup that is protected when things like a thunderstruck happen and fry electronic equipment or something similar.

My questions now are
  • Is it possible to have a hot swappable SATA drive where FreeNAS (periodically) backs up the main disk where the iSCSI share lies on
  • What is the procedure on swapping the backup drive, is it a simple physical operation or is software input required
  • In case my XenServer and FreeNAS get lost at the same time, what are the steps to recover data from one of the offline disks? Do I need to setup a new FreeNAS box first that can read the iSCSI share or does any unix machine do the job?
