Update: I figured it out. Unbelievably simple. Found the clue on the Veeam forum.

In the authentication credentials, instead of using the user_name, you have to use server_name\user_name. So in my case it was truenas\phil.

I hate Windows...

There's no hint or indication on that screen. Just some obscure error. Way to go, Microsoft.

Next Monday (03/06) I expect that the 12/05 - 1/01 data will be deleted and the full backup data set will begin the process again with fulls on 1/02, 2/05 and 3/06, incrementals in between.

If anyone is still interested in the Veeam Agent backup details, I can confirm that what I described above is what happened this morning.
