First thoughts are that this looks a little too scary. Not easy to determine who the vendor is and if there is any support? What about drivers/firmware, warranty, reference docs, etc...?

For $400.00, I am sure you can get a decent system from a reputable manufacturer that has actually been tested/used by someone in these forums and has some kind of warranty and support.

Also, note that the listing states:
Seller does not offer returns

But, in the end it is your cash (and data) so if you want to blaze the trail you may end up with a decent system.

As the title says any thought on the specs of this MB as a first "real" server build on a budget? Paired with a E3-1220 V2 and 16GB of ram to start will put it at about $400 give or take. Any other suggestions around the same total price range or reasons why I should look in a different direction?

You can get a supermicro x9scl on newegg for $150. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182252
If I needed something LGA1155, I'd spend an extra $50 and get new with a warranty.

I'm pretty sure it is a Tyan board. The seller has a number of different variations of it and this one happened to be LGA 1155.

Thanks for the info, I have some thinking to do.
