I've installed freeNAS 8 on my home system that has an Intel Duo Core 2 CPU installed.
Will that same ISO I downloaded (if i install it on another USB stick of course), work on an AMD 64-bit system or would I have to download another version of freeNAS for that specific AMD CPU?

Thank you!

Is the Intel Duo Core 2 64-bit? I would guess so, but you didn't say which version you had downloaded, the i386 or the AMD64. The AMD64 is for all 64bit processors, both Intel and AMD. Hope that helps!

Sorry! I downloaded the i386 (freeNAS 8) for the Intel Duo Core CPU. That CPU could handle a 64-bit Operating System. I don't care to run the AMD64-bit chip in 64-bit mode(?). If I can use the i386 with the AMD in 32-bit i'm all good. Is that possible? Thanks!

So I'm guessing the i386 will work for both AMD and Intel Chips in 32-bit mode even if they're 64-bit compatible...

Hi rnicolas,

You can run i386 on chips that are 64 bit capable, sure....but why would you want to?

Unless there is a specific compelling need to run the i368 flavor I would encourage you to use the 64 bit version.

Is the advantage just more memory utilization? How stable is it and is it worth it? I've been using the 32-bit version and it works great, I suppose i'm just a bit hesitant to use something different I have never tried, the 64-bit version, on a customer's computer... Would I need a bigger USB stick? I only have a 2GB stick.

Clearly protosd is having some posting problems right now :D.

I would recommend you install the amd64 version. It works much better than the i386 version in terms of memory usage. You have probably noticed that your systems does not appear to use all the memory that it has. This will go away if you install the amd64 version. Simply backup the existing config, install new version, restore the config and you're ready to go.
