A) Yes
B) Use CrystalDiskInfo to know what’s in there before you shuck
C) Burn in is almost mandatory. Do burn in. See scripts in resources

You cannot burn-in without opening the enclosure, right? So hypothetically, you loose warranty while - if unlucky - get a bunch of bad sectors reported by badblocks and are left with a 180$ paperweight you don't even want to use as a external USB-drive anymore.

This is why “be exceedingly careful while shucking”. It is possible, if not trivial, to open the enclosure without breaking any tabs. If the drive fails, return it to its enclosure and RMA it / return it to the store as defective.

The ethics of that move hold up. You are testing the drive. If it’s defective, it should be replaced. It’s not being abused, and you’d be returning it to the enclosure it came in.
