I'm new to FreeNAS, is it possible to access the CIFS share over the internet? If yes how do I start? I tried to search things over the web and the forum but haven't seen any.
CIFS really is designed as more of nas based protocol. There are other protocols to share files over wan. Look at webdav that was just released in 9.3...
By "assign a share to a backup which is located in a remote location" do you mean "backup the share offsite"? If so, you should use ZFS replication or rsync rather than CIFS.

I don't know if it's necessarily better or worse than VPN, but accessing shares via an SSH tunnel is an alternative. Using public key authentication seems to make it pretty tight. I did a little how-to with details for AFP, but I'm sure it could be adapted to CIFS. So far no visits from RussianMafia.;)
