Hi Gents,

Just asking before i'm going to order my stuff, is it possible to create a 8-bay pool with the Asrock C2550D4l?

I know it can handle 12 SATA devices, but this is the configuration i want to create:
OS pool : 2 x 128GB SSD (Mirror)
Data Pool: 8 x 3TB (Raidv2)

Leaving me with 4 SATA slots empty for later expantion with another 4 disk pool.
Any thoughts on this?

Can you set it up the way you want it right now yes that you can do.
You might want to check your math though since 8+2 is 10 which leaves you with 2 ports not 4 so you cant add another 4disk pool

however there have in the past been reports of issues with the Marvell controllers that the C2550D4l and its bigger brother the C2750D4l uses. I personnally did not have any issues with my disks using the marvell controllers with the latest firmwares applied the only issue for me was that they did not support hot-plugging with freenas but that is a minor issue in my opinion.
So if you are unsure i would suggest getting a M1015 and flashing it and then using it for your main 8-disk pool and use the intel ports for your OS

What is your use case for hot swap? How often would you need to hot swap? It should not drive the choice of motherboards, unless you have a very unusual use case.
