so far the hardware i'm locked into is as follows
You actually are not locked into that hardware and you should seriously consider something else, even if you need to sell what you have on eBay at a loss. Any i5 or i7 processor is not the thing to use with FreeNAS.

ECC memory support. Read the spec on the manufacturer site for those boards.

Chris mostly has the right of it.

i5 and i7 CPU's do not support ECC, and the Supermicro boards we recommend are intended for (and often, require) ECC modules.

I use an i3-6100 in my main FreeNAS and find it more than sufficient beeftastic.

That chassis doesn't have much room for drives and the airflow is not very good. There are many better options.
What is the reason for the 4U chassis and is it a requirement for it to be so shallow?
