42 smartd-daemon status processes running

Hi all,

My FreeNAS 11.1-U5 box is running 42 smartd-daemon processes, see below. Is this normal/expected behaviour?

I'm not sure if it is related to https://redmine.ixsystems.com/issues/35404, which has been fixed for U6. If the issue persists after U6 is out (due early next week), please create a report at bugs.freenas.org and post the issue number here.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply! It seems to be a similar issue; I have rebooted my U5 box and just examined the situation after 2 days of uptime. Again many smartd processes. I am now upgrading to U6 and will check in a couple of days if it now has been solved.

You are not alone. I've got 44 smart-daemon processes running on my server, with FreeNAS 11.1-U6. I have done several recent cycles of detaching volumes, pulling a pool of disks from the hot swap bays, and inserting a backup pool of disks. I wonder if disks showing up on a running server triggers a new smartd-daemon process, but removing a disk doesn't kill a process.

Good to hear that it probably isn't a specific issue related to my exact setup! I haven't done any changes since I build the NAS (2-3 years ago?), I only installed updates. The bug report did not find the cause yet, the investigation is still ongoing.
