More research and a new direction.

Building a new server to replace my current one (See signature).

Usage:
Movies & Music - accessed by Plex and direct access via SMB by 1-3 users
Backup and Family member Storage - direct access via SMB by 1-3 users
May move over existing pools from old server to new server
Proposed System:
  • OS TrueNAS Core
  • MB Supermicro MBD-X12STL-F Micro ATX ~ $316
  • CPU Intel Xeon E-2356G Processor 6 Core 3.2GHz Base5GHz Boost LGA1200 ~ $400
  • Mem 2x Samsung M393A4G43AB3-CWE 32GB DDR4 ECC Registered RAM Module 3200MHz ~$400
  • PSU Corsair CP-9020200-NA RM850x 850W ATX12V/EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD ~ $140
  • Boot 2 x Kingston 480GB A400 SATA 3 2.5" Internal SSD ~ $52
  • Drives 4 x WD Red Pro WD102KFBX 10 TB Hard Drive 3.5in Internal - SATA 7200rpm ~$800
    RAID-Z2 giving approximately 14 TB
  • Cntlr LSI Broadcom SAS 9300-8i 8-port 12Gb/s SATA+SAS PCI-Express 3.0 ~ $194
  • Cables 2 x Internal Mini SAS to SATA Cable 3.3 Feet ~ $28
  • Case Fractal Design FD-C-DEF7X-01 Define 7 XL ~ $225
  • Cooler Corsair Hydro Series H100x Liquid CPU Cooler (or simular) ~ $130
    (240 - 280 mm radiator)
With Tax that brings the system to just about $3,000 which is just about on target.

I know there will be a discussion about the Drives. I know the Pros run a bit warmer and a little bit noiser than the WD Reds, but they also come with a 5 year warranty. And 10TB is a sweet point on the cost if I buy 4.

Anything to look out for? Suggestions?
