Hey, I'm looking to do a FreeNAS build for
  • Transmission
  • Crashplan/Rsynch (or some other way of locally backing up my devices and then to the cloud)
  • Emby (occassionally transcoding HD content, 1 maybe 2 streams)
  • OwnCloud (less than 500mb back and forth/month)
  • Couchpotato
  • Back up Media
my build thus far:
  • Mirrored Bootdisk: 2x SanDisk Ultra Fit CZ43 16GB
  • Fractal Node 304 White
  • SeaSonic SS-400FL2 Active PFC F3 400W 80 PLUS Platinum Fanless
  • Supermicro A1SRI-2758F-O
  • 4x KVR16LSE11/8 (32GB of Kingston 1600 RAM)
  • 6x WD Red 6TB (run in Raid-Z2)
  • 1 TB WD Portable to run Transmission off of...
My only questions are:

Do you guys think heat will be an issue?

Is there anything wrong with this boot setup?

Is there any reason I should switch to the Avoton 2750? I've seen some benchmarks that show the 2750's turbo boost is significant- I just don't know if it is worth it in a real world application

I'm probably going to hold-off and wait for FreeNAS 10... I have only skimmed the 10 material - any reason this is a bad idea?

Thanks

Avoid fanless PSUs. There are two places where you absolutely need fans: PSU and hard drive cages.

I recommend getting something from Supermicro's QVL.

C2758 is the networking version. Instead of turbo boost, it has support for hardware acceleration of certain network operations - absolutely useless in FreeNAS.

The HDD's have 2 92mm fans pulling air out - should that suffice?

I'll give it a look

I mean is the price difference worth it though? I mean my first build was probably overkill for FreeNAS - my last "build" was a glorified transmission server - so I have very little experience with FreeNAS as a true server in the sense of hitting with a bunch of devices and such...

thanks for getting back to me....

There is a big difference in price between the 2550 and the 2750, but I didn't think there was a very big difference between the 2750 and the 2758.

I guess... I just don't know if I will ever top out the 2758 so why would I upgrade?

$30 is the difference between my board with the 2758 and the next one. I just don't know how much strain i'll be putting on the 2750. Potentially, it is $30 for a reduction in emby bufferring times of a second or so.. which is to say is it worth it?

But I will probably buy the 2750 when all is said and done

FreeNAS doesn't have support for the Turbo Boost feature. So its totally not functional on FreeNAS. :P

Turbo Boost doesn't require much besides ACPI - are you thinking of QuickAssist (that accelerates cryptography tasks) by any chance?

thanks. for some reason I thought the programs accessed the motherboard more or less directly - emby transcoding being my major concern

thanks for your guide too - very helpful...

So I did some checking - at least for FreeBSD 8.something, powerd is needed to request turbo frequencies from the processor.
