Hi all,

I have the following build:

EP2C602-4L/D16 Motherboard
2 x Xeon E5 2670
32GB RAM

I have the intension to run web servers on VMs on top of FreeNAS 11.

Can someone comment on the project and recommend an afordable rackmount case that can be bought in Europe?

Thanks in advance,

Miguel

I'm live in New Zealand and am looking for a similar case, and this one https://www.xcase.co.uk/collections/4u-rackmount-cases/products/424-ex-pro
spiked my interest. even delivered to me it's cheaper than the Supermicros.
Has an inbuilt SAS expander so you can control all the drives of a single 4/8 port card

I was impressed with the case. I think it is a good candidate to aquisition,

I found this one:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219038

But the shipping was like almost 100% of the item value. It also doesn't have a SAS expander, but uses 6xSFF8087 connectivity.

I could only take advantage of this configuration using all SATA ports on the motherboard plus a 8i card.

Do you know if the expanders are out of the shelf devices?

Speaking to your project, why would you run a web server on top of freenas when ESXi 6.x is free to use? Run your NAS and web servers in their own VMs in ESXI. Your hardware is way overkill for freenas. Do some research and you will see how many servers you can run with that hardware under ESXi, it will surprise you.

Thanks for the hint Garym :)

I need to identify a better architecture for what I have.

But the idea was to make an hyper converged system that has better TOC than using role specific machines.

I will investigate then.

There are some Hadoop/Spark workloads that I need to run, so I am still trying to to sense what I have.

Best Regards,
M

I don't think i would run a serious web server on freenas. Maybe i would run a silly home web server in a jail or something but nothing that was meant to be really usable.
