Im still testing / trying FN (for the past 6 or 7 mo), and i have a 2nd test system (not my main test sys in sig) where im trying to debug some 10g performance issues. (so this system is just a fresh install on a usb stick of 11.2u4.1 , its only been running a signle SMB share with a single pool, and the SSH service).

all had been running fine, i delete my pool, and create a new one (with a different disk layout for my testing), and when i did that samba died, now samba wont start .

some output from CLI:

Code:
root@freenas:/mnt # service samba_server start
[: ==: unexpected operator
install: stat /var/db/samba4: No such file or directory
Performing sanity check on Samba configuration: FAILED

root@freenas:/mnt # testparm
mkdir failed on directory /var/db/samba4/private/msg.sock: No such file or directory
Unable to initialize messaging context!

I dont really care about this problem (ie i can wipe and fresh install), but i want to know/figure out whats going on (so that once i actually deploy FN , ill know).

Im also now noticing these weird folder (or files?) when i was looking around the system (whats with the samba4.date folders ??):

Code:

I had a similar issue. It turned out that files within the /var/db/samba4 directory had been corrupted. In your case it may have been inadvertently removed when you deleted the pool although it is weird that the deletion of the pool doesn't relocate /var to a new location. Either way when Samba is unable to create new files in this folder for any reason it also can't initiate a messaging context. Most likely because this directory contains the files which track meta-data for active connections. That said I'm not familiar with how Samba is actually implemented on a code level so I may be wrong.

I followed the steps outlined in another thread, https://www.ixsystems.com/community...ty-check-on-samba-configuration-failed.74186/, and they helped me.

As for the original post I made I doubt it's relevant outside of trying to figure out what causes the issue. https://www.ixsystems.com/community...config-to-freenas-defaults.76229/#post-531083

thanks for the reply and info. I do think you are correct in your assessment.

I missed your original reply, until today, as i started seeing this again on a different FN test machine i have (im still testing FN on 4x different physical servers, so no important data, just doing various benchmarks mostly). (a reboot resolved the issue- but i still wanted to post/log some details here)

On this server, im running FreeNAS-11.2-U4.1 (fresh install, not upgrade)

and while the server has been running great for a few weeks (with essentially zero use), today i went to delete the 7x disk Z2 pool i had (to then recreate a different disk layout for performance testing). No problems deleting the pool (i did check off both boxes, ie remove shares, and mark disks as new).

I then created the new pool (a 2x mirror of 4disk Z2) , and created the SMB share, only to notice that the SMB service was no longer running. (clicking start just spun the spinner for about 10s, and it remained off - i tried this a few times including login/logout).

nothing in /var/log/messages (nothing SMB related at all)
no anything in /var/log/daemon.log.

i read a few posts here , and cd into /var/db/samba4 and here again im seeing this type of file again (and as before, its occuring when im having smb service start issues):
Code:
root@freenas:/var/db # ls
collectd ipf nfs-stablerestart.bak pkg services.db syslog-ng.ctl
dhclient.leases.igb1 locate.database ntp ports sss syslog-ng.persist
entropy mountdtab ntpd.drift portsnap sss_mc zfsd
freebsd-update netdata ntpd.leap-seconds.list samba4 statd.status zoneinfo
hyperv nfs-stablerestart nut samba4.20190621150841 sudo

This install is really a basic one ( created a few weeks ago) i did a fresh FreeNAS-11.2-U4.1 install (to usb), added a static IP on the 1g nic, a static on the 10g nic, created that one pool and turned on SMB sharing.

I know the USB stick could be the issue, but if so, why is it always this same problem (ie always with the smb / samba4.<date> files?) - ive seen this on different HW/servers and different usb sticks/types (also seen it with i think nfsd <date> or db<date> files).

although i resolved it via a reboot, which is not a big deal as im still at my testing/learning FN stage (8 months now ha)- any info would help, thanks!
