As I read the documentation in FreeNAS for VMWare Aware Snapshots, VMWare should not actually list any snapshots within its management console - so as to not bleed performance on the vmware side (nested snapshot destroy io performance).
As I understand this - I would expect that the process would be;
FreeNAS tells ESXi that its going to fire a snapshot. ESXi then Quieses the guests where possible (thanks to vmware tools, VSS, etc). FreeNAS then issues a ZFS Snapshot. FreeNAS then tells ESXi to consolidate the snapshot back into a single vmdk, then jobs done.
Actually rolling back to a snapshot would be a somewhat more difficult task (destroying the current VM, replacing the folder structure with what was in the ZFS snapshot, reattaching the VM to ESXi and then firing it up again) - but still possible.
Not sure if i'm reading this wrong, but this does not seem to be the case. Looking inside the folder on putty i see the following;

After reading another thread on here about someone trying to do something similar (and that the VMWare support is new to 9.3) - is this only supported on iSCSI mounts?

After reading another thread on here about someone trying to do something similar (and that the VMWare support is new to 9.3) - is this only supported on iSCSI mounts?
